Ensemble 3 listens in on the effects of virtual and medial interweaving on the relationship between far and near. Do we still perceive distant places as alien, or are new and unfamiliar sound worlds entering our inner awareness of sounds?

Ensemble X
Ensemble X founded and directed by the composer and saxophonist Joachim Gies brings together musicians with different styles and forms. The borders of different genres shall be softened. The co-operators of the ensemble do not form a solid group, indeed constant change is specific feature of the ensemble. Its name which corresponds to the number of its member e. g. Ensemble 5, Ensemble 9, explains this.
The works composed by Joachim Gies for Ensemble X are characterized by a high degree of flexibility; their structures often are of an organic kind. In reciprocal game between given compositional themes and creative free spaces the composer becomes the source of impulses for interactive creative processes of the ensemble.
The Ensemble 6 gave its debut with the performance of ‘Der Bau’ by Franz Kafka set to music at ‘Schwartzsche Villa’ and ‘Haus am Waldsee’ in Berlin into 2002. In August 2003 Ensemble 3 first performed different parts of ‘La Divina Comedia’ by Dante set to music by Joachim Gies at ‘Haus am Waldsee’. The multimedia project ‘Transmissions: prag - berlin’, the setting to music of ‘Achtung Stufen’ by Walter Benjamin, the multimedia performance ‘Zeichen / Feld / Klang / Raum’ were realized in 2004. On 14 August 2005 ‘Der Klang der Mauer (The Sound of the Wall)’ was performed on the ground of ‘Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall Memorial Centre)’ at Bernauer Strasse. The first performance of the project ‘Grenzland’ with Werner Rehm took place in September 2005.

The graphic artist and painter Ulrich Werner and the saxophonist and composer Joachim Gies cooperated in many exhibitions and developed a great affinity of their picture- and sound-languages. Ulrich Werner and Joachim Gies direct a performance at ‘Atelierhaus K 19’, while the audience can watch the generational processes of sound and painting. The picture language is becoming the ‘score’ of the musicians; the sound language is being transformed into the symbolic language of the graphic arts.
